just saw this picture that allison took last weekend. daddy’s raking, lucy’s getting the bag ready, willie is supervising, and gus is waiting for his day to join us in the backyard. c’mon gus, the more the merrier.

this guy was a whole $4! welcome the newest member of the herndon household, harry potter herndon, already dressed in bows by lucy.

she’s getting the hang of it, don’t ya think?

the other day my wife was walking into a store and was stopped by a beggar asking for some money so he could eat. she didn’t have any cash, but she asked him if she could go to the subway next door and buy him some lunch.

he answered, “nah, i don’t like coldcuts.”

no joke.

allison (fully aware of the hilarity of the situation) asked him how he felt about mcdonalds instead. he immediately nodded and said, “i’ll take a number ten.” so she drove 5 minutes down the road and brought back lunch for the guy.

i don’t know what to do with that except post it here and laugh about it.

well, that and commend my wife being a far, far better person than me.

it’s new years day, and in honor of that and the fact that i haven’t posted in almost 2 weeks, i’m going to let you in on how i rang in 2009 today.

-i didn’t go to work. i slept in, ate orange flavored cinnamon rolls, and wore swoosh pants all day.
-i thought about calling bj to sign up for his “get your butt in shape class.” maybe i’ll tackle that on january 2. maybe.
-cleaned out the garage. new year’s resolution #1, check.
-went on a walk with two girls who didn’t see a whole lot of me last month.
-opened up a xmas gift — the long-awaited complete series of “ed” on DVD. the chinese lettering on the package, plus the VHS plastic casing stuffed with homemade DVDs, unedited commercials … yeah,  not quite what i was expecting … this must be only for the serious fan …
-conquered 4 levels of N64’s goldeneye, which i hadn’t done in 11 years (i’m pretty rusty with a silenced pp7). really, who needs a wii? tomorrow, it’s oldschool mariokart forwards and backwards.
-sat here wondering why my 17 month old daughter is wide awake laughing at herself in her crib at midnight.

this bumper used to be attached to a certain 96 honda accord—ironically, a honda accord much like the one often parked in the herndon family driveway. it was a little sad at first (notice the grim look on the driver’s face in this picture). but we’re laughing now…mostly…now that the police have left the scene.

she had a good run, that bumper did. see you on the other side.

i’ve spent all day wondering why i was so eager as a kid to get sick. i loved hearing my mom make that call to the school secretary — “brad herndon will not be in school today. he’ll be home sipping 7 Up and watching daytime television.” i don’t remember the “being sick” part of being sick. i just remember feeling a little bit like ferris bueller sticking it to principal rooney.

but this morning when i asked allison to call the church to tell them i needed to stay home, there was a feeling of defeat. all i could do was lay in the bed and moan (i know, i’m the pathetic patient every spouse wants to take care of). bottom line, somewhere in the past decade or two, this getting-sick-thing really ceased to be fun. here’s what i’ve learned today.

-i miss bob barker.
-apparently my stomach can’t handle what it used to (such as papa john’s bread sticks and garlic butter).
-oprah’s modern mother makeovers (or whatever) are pretty tight. you gotta be impressed with some of those. no shame.
-dr. gregory house is one phenomenally complex tv character.
-my wife is an incredible mother. really, she is. i loved getting to hear her with our little girl all day long.

so that’s what i’ve been doing today. what about you?
