save the drama for your momma

i’ll really try to keep this category from being all about the things my cute awesome little baby girl does, like grabbing her toes, rolling over, humming, laughing at willie, scratching her head with a spatula, all those things that make allison and i want to take pictures and post all over for the world to see (i know, we laugh at ourselves. we realize we’re just a few short breaths away from waving a handicam at a dance recital or buying a minivan…oh please no).

so here’s what happened the other night at the wagon wheezy (home of the herndon house, actually wagon wheel dr).

i came home and found out that allison’s sister had cut allison’s hair to give her bangs. allison’s never had bangs.
everything for me is usually an acquired taste—a very long, slow acquired taste.
allison likes to ask me upfront questions, usually while cornering me. she’s a foot shorter than me, but that means nothing really. i’m a weak man.

“you don’t like it, do you?”

i hope husbands everywhere feel my pain and cringe. “no! i like it, i mean, i think i like it, i just wasn’t expecting it. i liked your hair before and this is kinda different, but it’s good, it’s…it’s nice (never call anything about your wife “nice”), i like it, i probably just maybe liked it the other way a little…better…i think (never be honest either), but this isn’t ugly (never, never even touch the u-word, never), i like it…i think, yeah, i like it a lot.”

“he hates it. i knew he would.” that was my sister-in-law chiming in from the kitchen. as far as i was concerned, she was the reason i was in this tangly web of questioning.

“you hate it? really?”

now fortunately, my wife’s motto is “save the drama for your momma.” i knew that in this moment, she didn’t care about what i thought nearly as much as she just loved watching me squirm as a weak, powerless husband.

and she’s very good at it.

i’m taking her on a date later this week. it’s going to be a nice date.

her sister is babysitting.

(by the way, i like the bangs).

  1. I LOVE THE BANGS! I yelled for her through the chaotic crowd of parents trying to squish through the halls to pick up their precious cargo. I was calling for her to share my joy of her new look! I think it’s awesome!

  2. [...] hired an outside consultant to help me think bigger (she knows me well and has some new cute bangs), but i’m soliciting as much help as i can get, which is where you come in. inspire me, help [...]
